(Re)thinking team, efficiency and stress at work

Zurich (Switzerland) - June 2022

Prof. Dr. Lauren Howe  presented academic research on mindsets about stress and their importance during the ‘Re(thinking team, efficiency and stress at work’ event organized by Credit Suisse, which was attended by over 100 employees. The groundbreaking research she shared with the audience shows that people tend to view stress as more debilitating - something that is harmful to health and performance - or as more enhancing - something that can also have benefits to health and performance. The mindset people hold about stress shapes how they respond to stressful situations and relates to important outcomes like health symptoms and job performance. But given that messages about stress are often very negative, portraying it as a silent killer and an epidemic, people often fail to recognize this more enhancing side of stress. How can you make stress work for you? To change your perspective about stress and reframe stress from being debilitating to enhancing, researchers recommend the following three steps:

  1. See it! (see and acknowledge stress)

  2. Own it! (welcome the stress)

  3. Use it! (utilize the stress)
