Does change incite abusive supervision? The role of transformational change and hindrance stress

What we found: In the current highly competitive work environment, organizations frequently undergo transformational change initiatives. However, these endeavors often encounter setbacks due to insufficient training provided to supervisors for effectively managing the change process. Our study reveals a correlation between transformational change and the experience of hindrance stress among supervisors. Furthermore, it demonstrates a link between supervisors' hindrance stress and instances of abusive supervision.
Why it matters: Transformational change can significantly contribute to the development of hindrance stress among supervisors, which, in turn, can manifest as abusive supervision behaviors. It is imperative for organizations to adopt change management strategies that proactively address and minimize the occurrence of hindrance stress among supervisors.
What's next: Moving forward, organizations could prioritize assisting supervisors in 1) effectively managing their stress-related emotions and behaviors during periods of significant change and 2) developing leadership skills required to implement transformation smoothly.
